Group locales so your team can better manage and use large numbers of locales.
The video below shows three example groups, English, French, and Spanish, each of which contains locales.
Grouping locales provides several advantages:
- Improved management: grouping simplifies the management of a large number of locales by organizing them into meaningful groups.
- Cleaner UI: instead of displaying a long list of individual locales, the UI can show a smaller number of groups, making it more user-friendly and easier to navigate.
- Secondary fallback layer: Defining a default locale for a group introduces a secondary fallback layer in addition to the Space default. This can save time and effort when creating content, as the system will first look for content in the specific locale, then the group default, and finally the Space default.
Before you can group locales, make sure you have already added locales to your Space. For detailed instructions visit Adding Locales.
- Go to Settings.
- For Localization, click the Edit button.
- Click the + New Group button.
- In the input that displays, enter a name for the group.
- Click the Save button next to the Name input.
- Select locales you'd like to group by clicking the checkbox beside each locale.
- Click on the three dots to the right of the locale, select Assign to Group and choose the group.
- Click the Save Changes button.
The video below shows how to create a new locale group and populate it with locales.
To delete a locale group:
- Go to Settings.
- For Localization, click the Edit button.
- Click on the three dots to the right of the group.
- Select Remove Group. This doesn't delete the locales. Instead, the locales in that group are only ungrouped and repopulate the top of the list of locales.
The video below shows how to remove a group containing locales. In this example, the group is called French and contains three locales. When the group is deleted, the locales repopulate the main list of locales. For clarity, this example uses only the locales in the French group.
When a group default is set, if no content is present for a particular entry in any of the other locales within the group, they inherit the content from the group default locale. If there is no group default, Builder then uses the Space default.
For example, if you had a group of English locales — en-US, en-CA, en-GB — and set en-US as the group default, any content missing in en-CA or en-GB would be automatically filled with the content from en-US. If the group didn't have a default, Builder would use the Space default.
To set a default locale for a locale group:
- Go to Settings.
- For Localization, click the Edit button.
- Expand the group you'd like to set a default for.
- Click on the three dots to the right of the locale you want to set as the group default.
- Select Assign as group default.
Note that a locale group can only have one default. If you want to change the default, follow the steps above to set another locale as the default — the default badge moves to the new selection. The process is the same whether or not a default exists.
The video below shows assigning a default locale in a group.
- Go to Settings.
- For Localization, click the Edit button.
- Expand the group you'd like to remove the group from.
- Select the locale you want to remove from the group.
- Click Remove from group. The removed locale moves to repopulate the top of the list of locales and is removed from the group.
- Click Save Changes.
The next video shows removing a locale from an example group called Spanish. When the locale is removed from the group, it repopulates the main list of locales.
